TEP to Honor Champions of Equality at Gumbo Contest

Tennessee Equality Project Foundation is pleased to announce four Champions of Equality from West Tennessee. Such awards are given to individuals whose work and advocacy advance or protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families in Tennessee.

Champions of Equality from left to right: Chef Kelly English, Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove, TN State Senator Lee Harris, and Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham.
Chef Kelly English. As a business owner, Chef Kelly publicly opposed the “Turn the Gays Away” bill initially sponsored by a State Senator from Shelby County in early 2014. He sent a clear message that treating everyone equally is good for business in Tennessee.

Councilwoman Janis Fullilove. Councilwoman Fullilove was the first sponsor of the employment non-discrimination ordinance considered by the Memphis City Council in 2010 and ensured that the employment non-discrimination ordinance which passed in 2012 included gender identity (in addition to sexual orientation).

Senator Lee Harris. As a Memphis City Councilman from District 7, Senator Harris successfully sponsored an employment non-discrimination ordinance enacted by the Memphis City Council in 2012. His leadership attracted support from social justice, labor and business organizations for the legislation.

Sheriff Bill Oldham. As Shelby County Sheriff, Sheriff Oldham demonstrated commitment to ensure that all Shelby County Sheriff officers receive LGBT Cultural Competency training in 2014. His leadership demonstrates a commitment to serve and protect all people in Shelby County.
TEP Foundation will recognize the above champions of equality at the TEP Gumbo Contest on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 4:30 to 7 PM at the Bridges Center in Downtown Memphis. Purchase your tickets to this event at http://tepgumbocontest.blogspot.com/p/gumbo-tasting-tickets.html to help celebrate the achievements of these champions, enjoy great gumbo, and tap your foot to the New Orleans jazz of the Hot Memphis 4.
